- 1 INTRODUCTION TO CONTest.
-
- The program CONTest was written to use in the vhf/uhf/shf contest
- during the season '86/'87 which I joined with the contest-group
- PE1DCY/P.
- The goal was to develop a program that was usable during real-world
- conditions. The characteristic features of CONTest are the so called
- "automatic input" which makes it possible to enter the data of a
- station in an arbitrary order and the fact that the program can
- recognize a call even if the station is /p /a etc. (this is a must to
- check for dupe : e.g. the program recognizes that the call pe1hrb is
- the same call as hb/pe1hrb/p)
-
- The program has been implemented in the TURBO pascal language.
- In previous versions of the program the user interface used the Dutch
- language. From now on (version 2.10) the English (or a "familiar"
- h.i.) language is used.
-
- However the program has been used during more than a season, both the
- program and the manual can not be perfect (and contain errors ==> see
- Murphy). Therefore I accept no responsibility for the use of this
- program.
-
- When you have any questions about the CONTest program, or when you
- found one of the errors, please write !

- 1.1 FILES ON YOUR DISK.
-
- The following files should be present on the disk :
- 1) contest.com - The main program.
- 2) contest.msg - The helpfile for CONTest.
- 3) contmrg.com - Program to create new mergefiles.
- 4) mf.mrg - A mergefile.
- 5) manual.doc - This file.
-
-
-
- 1.2 REQUIRED EQUIPMENT.
-
- The CONTest program needs an IBM (compatible) PC with a PC-DOS or MS-
- DOS operating system version 2.11 or higher. The required memory space
- is :
- 1) memory used by your operating system +
- 2) memory used by contest.com +
- 3) 73 bytes for each logged qso +
- 4) 36 bytes for each merge-station in memory +
- 5) memory in use by other programs.
-
- Every qso logged on disk contains 73 bytes.
-
-
-
- remarks : 1) Turbo Pascal is a registered trademark of Borland
- international inc.
- 2) IBM and PC-DOS are registered trademarks of Internatio-
- nal Business Machines Corp.
- 3) MS-DOS is a trademark of Microsoft Corp.

-
- 2 STARTING THE CONTest PROGRAM.
-
- After starting the program from DOS the following data must be ente-
- red :
-
- GMT : You have to enter the number of hours to GMT
- here. i.e. the difference between local time and
- GMT.
- e.g.1 : Your system-time is 12.00
- The GMT is 10.00
- --> You enter "2"
- e.g.2 : Your system-time is 10.00
- The GMT is 12.00
- --> You enter "-2"
-
- QTH-LOCATOR : You have to enter your own qth locator. Both the
- new and the "old" qth locator are supported.
-
- NUMBER OF
- BANDS : Here you have to specify the number of bands that
- you want to log on your pc. The maximum number of
- bands that can be logged on one pc is 8.
-
- NAMES OF
- DATAFILES : You must now specify the names of all your data-
- files.
- The file-extension is always .DAT even if another
- extension has been specified. It is not possible
- to enter a filename twice. The maximum length of a
- filename is 5 characters (without the extension).
- Beware : some filenames as con, lst, prn etc. can
- cause problems.
- If a file exists the data is read into memory
- otherwise a new file is created.
-
- MERGEFILE : CONTest has the option of using a so called
- "merge-file". The mergefile contains data of
- station worked in previous contests.
- The file-extension of a mergefile is .MRG, even if
- an other extension has been specified. If the use
- of a mergefile is desired the name of the file has
- to be specified now. If the file exists the data
- is read into memory. If the use of a mergefile is
- not desired just press <RETURN>.
-
-
- Now the data of all the specified files are read into memory. A
- counter counts the number of qso's that has be read from the file. As
- soon as the files have been read you are confronted with the main
- menu.
-
-
-
-
-
- CONTest users manual
- page 5.
-
-
-
-
- remarks : 1) It's practical to choose the names of the datafiles in
- accordance with the wave-length of the bands which are
- logged e.g. 23.DAT for twenty-three centimeters, 2.DAT
- for two meters etc.
- 2) If you want to continue with existing data, just enter
- the filename. the program automatically continues with
- the old data.

- 3 THE STATUS LINE.
-
- On top of your screen you see the status line in reverse video. This
- line is shown in all menus, the online and the edit mode.
- From left to right you see : 1) The name of the mode.
- 2) The total distance of all qso's
- added together (points).
- 3) The average distance.
- 4) The filename which is currently
- active. To this file the qso's are
- written after they have been
- completed.
-
-
-
- 4 THE MAIN MENU.
-
- You can choose between :
-
- Online : After typing the <O> command you are in the
- online mode. This is the mode in which you
- add new qso's to a certain band.
- From this mode it is also possible to go to
- the edit mode and to give some useful com-
- mands.
-
- Logfiles : After typing the <L> command you move to the
- logfiles menu. In the logfiles menu you can
- create outputfiles to print.
-
- Next band : When you specified two or more bands to use
- on this pc, the <N> command moves you to the
- next band. The band which is currently active
- is shown in the status line.
-
- Previous band : When you specified two or more bands to use
- on this pc, the <P> command moves you to the
- previous band. The band which is currently
- active is shown in the status line.
-
- Exit program : After typing <ESC> you have to confirm your
- choice to exit the CONTest program.

- 5 THE ONLINE MODE.
-
- The online mode is the normal mode for this program. Here you add
- qso's to a band, edit them and can give some commands.
- Left of the prompt the qso number (serial number) is shown. In the
- status line and as a part of the prompt you see the band on which the
- qso's are logged.
-
- There are two ways of logging a qso in the online mode :
- 1) Automatic input.
- This is the common way of logging. Under normal conditions
- this is the only way of logging you will need.
- 2) Manual input.
- This can be useful to force certain data into the program
- when it's not accepted or wrong interpreted in the automatic
- mode.
-
-
-
- remarks : 1) Both methods can be used during one qso. So it's
- possible to log some items of a qso in the automatic
- input mode and the rest in the manual input mode.
- 2) Every qso is saved on disk directly when all data has
- been logged. In case of a power break no data is lost.

-
-
- 5.1 AUTOMATIC INPUT.
-
- What an easy way to log a qso !!
- The only thing you have to do is to enter an item that should be
- logged. In this way it is possible to log :
- 1) A call.
- 2) A sent report.
- 3) A received report.
- 4) A qth locator.
-
- Enter : <data>
-
- After an item has been entered the program responds which type of
- input has been recognized. As you see : the order of logging the four
- items of a qso is irrelevant.
- A qso is completed when all four items as mentioned above are logged.
- As long as not all the items are logged it is possible to enter an
- item again if it has to be corrected. The last entered item is retai-
- ned. When a call is entered the program automatically searches whether
- this station is worked before. Strokes are ignored when the program
- searches for dupe. e.g. pe1hrb is the same call as hb/pe1hrb/p when it
- checks.
-
-
-
- remarks : 1) A sent report has to be entered without the serial
- number. This number is logged automatically.
- 2) The rules the program uses to recognize the four items
- of a qso are :
- 1) The entered data not recognized as anything
- else is a call.
- 2) Data which contain only numbers and has a
- maximum length of 3 characters is a sent
- report.
- 3) Data which contain only numbers and has a
- length of more than 3 characters is a recei-
- ved report.
- 4) Data that starts with two alphabetical
- characters, followed by two numbers, followed
- by one or two alphabetical characters is a
- qth locator.
- 3) The GMT and distance are logged automatically.
- 4) It is not possible to log a call twice.
- 5) The maximum input length is 14.
-
-
-
- e.g.1 : 001 filename > 59
- filename > cl09a
- filename > 55001
- filename > pe1hrb/a
-
-
-
-
- CONTest users manual
- page 9.
-
-
-
-
- 5.2 MANUAL INPUT.
-
- If the CONTest program recognizes the entered data not correctly in
- the automatic input mode, it's possible to force the data into the
- program. This is done as shown below.
-
- Enter : <input character> <blank> <data>
-
- The four input characters are :
- <C> : To enter a call.
- <S> : To enter a sent report.
- <R> : To enter a received report.
- <Q> : To enter a qth(locator).
-
- When data is logged in this way no checks are performed on the data,
- except on the call which still has to be unique. So now it's possible
- to enter "London" as qth and 59a as a report. ATTENTION : The distance
- is set to zero when a qth is logged in this way.
-
-
-
- remarks : 1) When a qth is logged the distance is set to zero.
- 2) All data after the blank is logged.
- 3) When the entered data is too long an error occurs.
- 4) The order of logging the items is irrelevant.
-
-
-
- e.g.1 : 001 filename > c pe1hrb/a
- filename > s 59a
- filename > r 57a001
- filename > q delft
-
- e.g.2 : 002 filename > q cl09a
- filename > s 59a
- filename > r strong
- filename > c pe1dcy/p

-
- 5.3 COMMANDS AVAILABLE IN ONLINE MODE.
-
- In the online mode you can give some commands to get special effects
- or to edit a particular qso.
-
- Enter : <command>
-
- Following commands are available in online mode :
-
- <E> : Edit a qso. After the command is given the program
- asks to enter the call or the serial number of the qso
- that you want to edit. If one of these has been entered
- correctly the program moves to edit mode. Now you can
- edit following items :
- 1) The call.
- 2) The sent report.
- 3) The received report.
- 4) The qth(locator).
- 5) remarks field (option).
-
- <L> : Edit last completed qso. After the command is given the
- programs directly moves to edit mode, editing the last
- completed qso. Now you can edit the same items as
- mentioned above by the <E> command.
-
- <CE> : Edit all data of a qso. After the command is given the
- program asks to enter the call or the serial number of
- the qso that you want to edit. In addition to the items
- you can edit with the <C> and the <L> command you can
- also edit :
- 6) The distance.
- 7) Crossband.
- 8) GMT.
-
- <C> : Cancel qso. e.g when you have entered some items of a
- station but you are not able to complete the qso. After
- the <C> command has been given you can start again with
- all details for a new station. Just try to see what
- happens !
-
- <X> : Exit online mode. With the <X> command you go back to
- the main menu.
-
- <N> : Next band. Exactly as in the main menu, with the <N>
- command you go to the next band (if there is more than
- one band). In the status line you can see which band is
- currently active.
-
- <P> : Previous band. Exactly as in the main menu, with the
- <P> command you go to the previous band (if there is
- more than one band). In the status line you can see
- which band is currently active.
-
-
-
- CONTest users manual
- page 11.
-
-
-
-
- : Search for call in MergeFile. If there is a mergefile
- specified this command searches for a call in it.
- Useful when Direct search is switched off. For more
- details see chapter 8 about the use of the mergefile.
-
- <SQ> : Search for locator in MergeFile. If there is a mergefi-
- le specified this command searches for a qth locator
- in it. Useful when Direct search is switched off. For
- more details see chapter 8 about the use of the merge-
- file.
-
- <D> : Direct search on/off. With this option you can specify
- whether it is desired that the program searches the
- mergefile directly for calls and locators. For more
- details see chapter 8 about the mergefile.
-
- <DX> : Print best dx on screen.
-
- <GMT> : Print GMT on screen.
-
- <TIME> : Print system-time on screen.
-
- <DATE> : Print system-date on screen.
-
- <CLS> : Clear screen.
-
- <?> : Lists the helpfile on your screen. HELP gives you for
- example a list of all these commands.
-
-
-
- remarks : 1) A command must also be terminated with a <RETURN>.
- 2) When the current active band is the last specified
- band and the <N> command is given, the program moves to
- the first band. The opposite happens for the first band
- and the <P> command (the programs turns around in a
- circle).

-
- 6 THE EDIT MODE.
-
- From the online mode you could go to edit mode by giving the <E>, <L>
- or the <CE> command. In case of the <E> and <CE> command you also had
- to give a call or serial number to edit.
- In the edit mode you are able to edit all logged data of a qso except
- the serial number.
-
- Special key functions in edit mode :
-
- <ARROW> keys : With the arrow keys you can select the data to
- edit.
-
- <RETURN> : Moves the edit-field one position down. This has
- the same result as giving an <DOWN-ARROW>.
-
- <ESC> : Pressing <ESC> leaves the edit mode ignoring all
- changes you made in this mode. So all data as
- logged in online mode is still stored.
-
- <END> : Pressing the <END> key (often found on the numeri-
- cal key pad) you leave the edit mode and all
- changes are saved now.
-
- <INS> : The <INS> key switches between insert and overwri-
- te mode. In the right corner of your screen you
- see which mode is active. Default the overwrite
- mode is used.
-
- <DEL> : Deletes the character under the cursor.
-
-
- In the edit mode it is possible to force data into the program. When
- the type of data is not in accordance with the field an warning or an
- error occurs. In case of an error it is not possible to leave the
- field before the error has been corrected. Again it is not possible to
- log a call twice.
- If you went to edit mode by giving the <CE> command you are able to
- edit a "crossband" field. The only possibilities to enter are <Y>es,
- <J>a and <N>o. Default this field is set to "N". when you set this
- field to "Y" the distance of the qso is divided by two.
-
-
-
- remarks : 1) When the edit-field is positioned at the bottom field
- and <RETURN> or <ARROW-DOWN> is pressed, the edit mode
- is left with save of all changes.
- 2) If an illegal qth locator is logged the distance is set
- to zero.
- 3) If a qso is specified to be crossband, the distance is
- divided by two.

-
-
- 7 CREATING LOGFILES.
-
- In the main menu you choose <L>ogfiles.
- Now in the logfiles menu you can choose between :
-
- Alphabetical outputfile : To create a file sorted alphabetically
- on the call of the logged stations.
- Stations are sorted on the call, so e.g.
- hb9/pe1hrb/p is found under "P".
- An alphabetical outputfile always has
- the extension .ABC. The name of the file
- is the same as the name of the datafile
- from which a logfile is created.
-
- Chronological outputfile : To create a file with the stations
- sorted in order of which they have been
- worked. The chronological outputfile
- always has the extension .OUT. The name
- of the file is the same as the name of
- the datafile from which a logfile is
- created.
-
- Display outputfile : To display an outputfile just created by
- the <A> or <C> choice.
-
- Format outputfile : To set the number of qso's on a page and
- to set the pagelength.
-
- Print outputfile : To print an outputfile just created by
- the <A> or <C> choice.
-
- Specify coversheet : To specify a coversheet. The coversheet
- is the first page of your log. Here the
- name of the first operator, total score
- etc. are specified. The entered data is
- stored in a file with the same name as
- the corresponding datafile. The extensi-
- on of a coversheetfile always is .KOP.
-
- Exit logfiles : After typing <ESC> the logfiles menu is
- left and the program returns to the main
- menu.
-
-
-
- remarks : 1) On the data entered to specify a coversheet no syntax
- checks are performed.
- 2) When The <D>isplay or <P>rint choice is made the
- program asks you which, the alphabetical or the chrono-
- logical, file to display/print. If <ESC> is pressed the
- program returns to the logfiles menu.
- 3) If you choose the <A> or <C> command the program ask
- you if you want a coversheet above your file. If you
- want, a coversheetfile must be present on the disk. If
-
- CONTest users manual
- page 14.
-
-
-
-
- a coversheetfile is not present the outputfile is
- created without a coversheet.
- 4) If the total of valid qso's is not equal to the total
- number of qso's, you have to modify the coversheet by
- an editor.

- 8 THE MERGEFILE.
-
- CONTest supports the use of a so called "mergefile". This file con-
- tains information about stations worked in previous contests. The
- CONTest program can search for some items in this data.
- The advantages of a mergefile are only available in the online mode.
-
-
-
- 8.1 HOW DOES IT WORK ?
-
- When you started the CONTest program you could specify the name of the
- mergefile. Remember that a mergefile always has the extension .MRG (On
- the original disk the standard mergefile mf.mrg is present). When a
- file has been specified the data of stations worked in previous
- contests is read into memory.
- When you are in the online mode you can use this data. There are two
- items the program can search for : 1) A call.
- 2) A qth locator.
-
-
- In the online mode :
-
- You enter a call : Now the program searches in the mergefile.
- Two thing happens now :
- 1) If the call is in the mergefile all the
- data about this call is printed on your
- screen right of the entered call. From
- left to right you see :
- 1) The call as logged the previous
- time.
- 2) The qth locator as logged the
- previous time.
- 3) The bands the station has been
- worked on in the past.
- 2) On top of your screen (below the status
- line) two extra lines appear.
- 1) On the upper line all calls, which
- are in the mergefile, with the same
- suffix as the entered call are
- printed.
- 2) On the lower line all calls which
- are worked during the actual
- contest and having the same suffix
- as the entered call are printed.
-
- You enter a locator : Now the program searches in the mergefile.
- On top of your screen (below the status
- line) two extra lines appear.
- 1) On the upper line all calls, which are
- in the mergefile, whose qth locator is
- the same as the locator of the entered
- call are printed.
-
-
- CONTest users manual
- page 16.
-
-
-
-
- 2) On the lower line all calls which are
- worked during the actual contest and
- which qth locator is the same as the
- locator of the entered call are printed.
-
-
-
- remarks : 1) If there are to many calls to print on the extra lines
- on top of your screen, some calls are not printed.
- 2) If the program searches on qth locator, it is possible
- you miss some calls which you expected to be in that
- locator. The reason is some rounding errors in conver-
- ting the old to the new locator or vice versa.

- 8.2 THE <D> COMMAND.
-
- If the used mergefile is very large, the response time of CONTest
- increases. If you find the program to slow as it is searching in the
- mergefile, you can switch the search procedure off. This is done in
- the online mode by giving the <D> command. This command specifies if
- direct search is switched on/off. After the command has been given the
- program prints the actual status of this command. To set direct search
- on again, just give the <D> command again. If direct search is swit-
- ched off the program searches only in the data of the actual contest.
-
-
-
- 8.3 THE AND <SQ> COMMANDS.
-
- To search in the mergefile, if direct search is switched off, two
- commands are available :
-
- : Search Call.
- When a call is specified the program searches in the merge-
- file. The results are the same as when direct search was on.
-
- <SQ> : Search Qth.
- When a qth locator is specified the program searches in the
- mergefile. The results are the same as when direct search
- was on
-
-
-
- 8.4 CREATING A NEW MERGEFILE.
-
- With the separate program CONTmrg.com you are able to generate a new
- mergefile. There are two possibilities :
- 1) Create a new mergefile.
- 2) Add new stations to an existing mergefile.
-
- After starting the program from DOS you have to enter :
-
- Name DataFile : The Calls from this file are added to the
- MergeFile. The DataFile always has the
- extension .DAT.
-
- Band : Here you enter the band on which the qso's of
- the DataFile are made. If you just press
- <RETURN>, the stations are not marked with a
- band.
-
- Name old MergeFile : If you want to add the stations of the
- DataFile to an existing MergeFile, you enter
- the name of this old MergeFile. The extension
- always is .MRG. If you want to create a new
- MergeFile, just press <RETURN>.
-
-
-
- CONTest users manual
- page 18.
-
-
-
-
- Name new MergeFile : To this filename the data is written. The
- extension always is .MRG.
-
-
-
- remarks : 1) If a call is present in the DataFile and in the old
- MergeFile, the new MergeFile contains the data of
- station as logged in the DataFile (the MergeFile always
- contains the latest details).
- 2) If the band is 1.5 cm you enter 15 for the band.
- 3) As e.g. a station in the old mergefile was only active
- on 70 cm, and now the datafile you add to this mergefi-
- le is specified to be a 23 cm band datafile, in the new
- mergefile the station is "active" on both the 70 and 23
- cm band.

- 9 RECORD FORMATS.
-
- In this chapter the record formats as used in the TURBO pascal imple-
- mentation of CONTest are shown.
-
-
-
- 9.1 THE RECORD FORMAT OF THE DATAFILE.
-
- The record format of a .DAT file is shown below :
-
- record tijd : string[5];
- prefix : string[4];
- suffix : string[4];
- strook1 : string[4];
- strook2 : string[7];
- ontvangen : string[7];
- verzonden : string[3];
- volgnummer : integer;
- qth : string[6];
- qrb : integer;
- crossband : boolean;
- commentaar : string[15];
- next : ^.DAT record; { a pointer }
- end;
-
-
-
- 9.2 THE RECORD FORMAT OF THE MERGEFILE.
-
- The record format of a .MRG file is shown below :
-
- record prefix : string[4];
- suffix : string[4];
- strook1 : string[4];
- strook2 : string[7];
- qth : string[6];
- actief : integer;
- next : ^.MRG record; { a pointer }
- end;
-
- The field "actief" is coded as followed :
- When you see the field as a bit field of 8 bits with bit no. 0 the LSB
- en bit no. 7 the MSB, for each band on which the station is active one
- bit is set :
